Announcement LATEST - USA release of The Sailor's Revenge

Bap Kennedy's album "The Sailor's Revenge" (Deluxe) has been released in America on 8 January 2013 by Proper American. Bap celebrated the release with a tour of the US East coast, bringing him to Washingon, Philapelphia, New York and Boston in January. Further US & European dates are planned for later in the year, including a return to Italy as well as Scandinavian dates, where he will be opening for John Prine.

The Sailor's Revenge was named one of MOJO Magazine's Top 10 Americana albums of 2012. No Depression reviewer Alan Harrison named it the No. 1 Americana album of the year, calling it "truly a masterpiece from a man who is finally comfortable with his place in the world"

 BAP KENNEDY'S FAVOURITE BAND, THE MIGHTY SHAMROCKS REUNION TOUR IS TO TAKE PLACE IN AUG 2012.

"If you’d told me in 1981 I’d be sharing a stage with The Mighty Shamrocks and singing with them I’d have been blown away. Well here we are in 2012 and that’s what is going to happen my friends. 
Mickey Stephens the Shamrocks singer and songwriter had that thing I’ve been looking for. I wasn’t sure what it was but it seemed like his words were simple but effective in a poetic kind of way. It made me think about the kind of songs I wanted to write. And of course the singing and the melodies were just compelling. To my ears his voice was Bob Dylan filtered through John Lennon. Mickey made me think about the importance of the words and I went in search of wordsmiths who could teach me. The greatest teacher of all was Hank Williams who showed me the power of deep simplicity. There are others of course like Leonard Cohen and Lou Reed, but the penny dropped in Randalstown, Northern Ireland. There were many all night sessions in Mudd Wallace’s Homestead Studio, when he would play us the ongoing recordings that were to become the fabled Mighty Shamrocks one and only album “Paddy” (named in honour of their deceased drummer Paddy McNicholls)
I saw Mickey in the studio early one morning back in 1981. He was cradling a half full bottle of red wine and had a deranged look, like a mad poet. He was leaving and we were arriving. It was a fleeting moment and I’ve haven’t seen him since; and as far as I know he has no memory of it.

 When I was barely out of my teens I was in a band called TEN PAST SEVEN.  We recorded a song called CRACKIN UP that was featured on the TUBE TV show. It came out on GOOD VIBRATIONS early 1983. While we were in the studio the Producer MUD WALLACE played us some songs by a band called THE MIGHTY SHAMROCKS who were making a record there at the same time. We were a juvenile power pop band but this was music by men. They sounded like cowboys from another planet, world weary and sophisticated. And they had pedal steel. Not the kind you hear on cheesy country songs but soulful, cool and epic. It went deep into me and I wanted to make a record like that.

 
 I took a cassette copy of the record with me to London in the mid eighties when I left Belfast in search of the big time. I turned on many people over the years to this great lost record and as the decades rolled on the MIGHTY SHAMROCKS were always somewhere in the back of my mind, wherever I went in the world.
Fast forward 30 years and finally the great lost record is about to be released on GOOD VIBRATIONS and the movie of the same name about the one and only TERRI HOOLEY is storming the film festival circuit before a worldwide release . And I’m working with MUD WALLACE again, this time producing the newest addition to the GOOD VIBRATIONS stable, the lean mean and hungry HARDJETS. They’re playing their first gig today Friday 6th July at the OH YEAH CENTRE at 5pm.  And the circle is unbroken. Amen

It was recorded in British Grove Studio in 2011 at the same time as Bap's latest album "The Sailor's Revenge" (produced by Mark Knopfler) was recorded. Into The Arms of Love features on the bonus disc which is included in the Deluxe Edition of The Sailor's Revenge.

Announcement - As Bap turns 50 this month, we wish him all the best with "The Sailor's Revenge"

 

Bap Kennedy's new album The Sailor’s Revenge has now been officially released in America. The Sailor’s Revenge is the outcome of a creative collaboration between Bap & Mark Knopfler. All songs on the album have been written by Bap. The album was recorded at Mark’s studio, with Mark playing guitar on 6 of the 11 tracks and also singing some backing vocals. It is rare for Mark to produce for another artist, but he has been closely involved with The Sailor’s Revenge from start to finish. Between Bap and Mark they carefully selected, from a large batch of new Bap songs, a collection that fitted the theme of the album.

The Sailor’s Revenge is being released by Proper America and features various members of Mark’s band as well as top drawer session musicians such as Jerry Douglas and Ian Thomas.

Autism NI makes history !

As co-patrons of Autism NI, Bap & Brenda Kennedy would like to congratulate Autism NI.
In the words of Dr Arlene Cassidy (CEO Autism NI) -

By virtue of the Autism Act (NI) 2011, Northern Ireland now leads the way in terms of Disability Legislation as it affects people on the autistic spectrum.
The following email is the text of an email which has now been sent out throughout the entire Northern Ireland Civil Service ......

“Changes to Disability Discrimination Act 1995

This note advises staff and managers of an important change to the Disability Discrimination Act 1995 (DDA).

The DDA provides protection for disabled persons against discrimination. It also recognises that various barriers exist within society which may present practical difficulties for disabled persons who are in employment. Accordingly there is a positive duty on employers to make “reasonable adjustment” to their policies and premises where reasonable and appropriate.

The DDA defines disability as “a physical or mental impairment which has a substantial and long-term adverse effect on a person’s ability to carry out normal day-to-day activities”.

Autism is a lifelong developmental disability that affects how a person communicates with and relates to other people. It also affects how they make sense of the world around them. It is a spectrum condition which means that while all people with autism share certain difficulties, their condition will affect them in different ways.

The Autism Act (NI) 2011 has amended the DDA to remove any ambiguity as to whether the term “disability” applies to autism spectrum conditions. The effect of this amendment is to clarify that a condition which has a substantial and long-term adverse effect on someone’s ability to “take part in normal social interaction” or in “forming social relationships” can constitute a “disability”.

Managers are asked to take note of this important change and of the need to consider reasonable adjustments for staff with an autism spectrum disorder.”

Announcement THE SAILORS REVENGE - AMERICAN RELEASE

 

The official American release date for Bap Kennedy's new album The Sailor’s Revenge is 5th June 2012. The Sailor’s Revenge is the outcome of a creative collaboration between Bap & Mark Knopfler. All songs on the album have been written by Bap. The album was recorded at Mark’s studio, with Mark playing guitar on 6 of the 11 tracks and also singing some backing vocals. It is rare for Mark to produce for another artist, but he has been closely involved with The Sailor’s Revenge from start to finish. Between Bap and Mark they carefully selected, from a large batch of new Bap songs, a collection that fitted the theme of the album.

The Sailor’s Revenge is being released by Proper America and features various members of Mark’s band as well as top drawer session musicians such as Jerry Douglas and Ian Thomas.

"The Sailor's Revenge" Official UK Release date

 

Bap Kennedy's new album The Sailor’s Revenge has been released on 30th of January. Two versions of the album have been made available, a standard and a limited edition deluxe version which includes a bonus disc made up of 11 of Bap's personal favourites from his career including tracks with Steve Earle, Shane McGowan, a co-write with Van Morrison, songs that have appeared in Hollywood movies and 2 previously unreleased tracks.

Bap - Patron of Autism NI

Bap Kennedy was appointed as patron on June 24th 2010 at the Autism NI VIP Celebration (20th Anniversary) in the Atrium, Ulster Museum, Belfast, at which Bap was honoured to perform with his band. He was accompanied by his wife Brenda, who has written several books about Asperger Syndrome (a form of Autism) and his stepson Kenneth Hall, who has Asperger Syndrome and has also written a book about his experiences with the condition.  

Among the other notable people there were Arlene Cassidy, CEO of Autism NI, Sir Reg Empey, leader of the UUP; Liz Aiken MBE, a founding member of Autism NI who received the MBE in 2007 for her services to Autism; Cllr Michael Humphrey, Deputy Lord Mayor of Belfast; Conall McDevitt, SDLP MLA, obo Dominic Bradley, SDLP MLA; and Jerry Newport, American author with Asperger Syndrome whose life provided the inspiration for the film Mozart and the Whale. 

Autism NI is a parent led partnership organisation having been formed to promote positive collaboration between parents, professionals and individuals with Autism to address the need for appropriate services.

This partnership ethos extends to the charities promotion of a multi disciplinary, cross agency response to issues such as assessment, diagnosis and early intervention.

The charity's mission to support parents and individuals with an Autistic Spectrum Disorder is core to its work and is based on individualised assessed need.

The charity is committed to promoting best practice, accessible to all irrespective of family circumstances.

Hello to whoever is reading this blog. And if you bought “Howl On” or are about to -  then thanks for putting your money where your ears are.
The reviews have been very good so far and in fact are probably the best I’ve had as far as I can remember. My first album “Energy Orchard” by the band of the same name came out in 1990 so I’m coming up to twenty years of doing this – making records and playing the songs in far flung places. I’m currently working on new material and rehearsing songs from the new CD . I’ll be out touring later this year and coming to a town near you! Watch this space for details....
August has arrived and the 40th anniversary of the moon landing has come and gone -  but hopefully “Howl On “ will keep a flame under the greatest show on earth. The last great optimistic act of the 20th century still resonates with me and I think with a lot of other people. In my mind Apollo was a great universal moment that united mankind and gave us a chance to look back at ourselves and our world. These are much more cynical times now and I can’t imagine something as far out and exciting (or expensive) as the race to the moon happening today, but then I’m not seven anymore. Of course I know now it really only happened because of the  Cold War - but I had no idea about that then. I thought we were going to the moon because we wanted to. And I wrote the “Howl On” songs all those years later because I wanted to tap into that feeling again.  I know in my heart that time has gone forever and that all things must pass  - but I will always look back with great fondness on the couple of days in 1969 when John Kennedy’s crazy challenge became a reality and a comic book came to life.

...Also I’m hoping Gary McKinnon gets off the hook and that we all wake up after a good dream.

Welcome to my new website...And my first blog...Lots of changes in Bap world including getting married and settling down in the beautiful County Down with Brenda. As you can see Brenda has been busy writing books, recording her debut album ( produced by me..of course! ) and making art..not to mention getting on my case to get the guitar out and write some songs...and anybody out there waiting for another record from me might be interested to know I have something new in the can...release dates to be firmed up but it could be a couple of months due to the nature of the record...the following might give you an idea of what to expect.
 
 
I was a seven year old Belfast cowboy trying to stay awake for the first footsteps on the moon. When I woke up they were already on their way home. Thirty seven years later I decided to write some songs about it because of a book called Moon Dust, that I devoured by the light of a log fire DVD at the start of a strange lonesome year in London. The Apollo missions were suddenly fresh, wonderful, insane and large as life to me, a man now in his forties - slightly older than the crew of Apollo 11 were in 1969.
What had become of these men and what had they experienced? How could such a momentous event be reduced to an MTV logo? I was lonely and crazy for love and becoming obsessed by the whole saga. I bought every book and documentary I could find on the subject and immersed myself in the lives of the chosen few who went up there and didn’t care if they never came back.
I was in love with America as a child and when I finally got to New York in 1989 I wasn’t disappointed. I’d forgotten all about cowboy suits and spacemen by then, enthralled by the 24 hour bars beside Port Authority. Gradually America wore me down and I fell out of love with the best and worst of everything. But now maybe things are changing. I’m starting to feel that good times are ahead and inspiration is flowing again, not just in me but in the world. The feeling that anything is possible if we just put our minds to it.   We went to the moon didn’t we? All of us.
