Parenting a Child with Asperger Syndrome        Buy Online

For parents of children with Asperger Syndrome ordinary parenting just doesn't always do it - AS kids need a different approach. Brenda is mother to thirteen-year-old Kenneth, author of Asperger Syndrome, the Universe and Everything, and since his diagnosis at the age of eight she has gathered together the parenting ideas and tips that have had a positive effect on Kenneth's life. Brenda discusses parents' reaction to their child's AS and gives advice on how better to understand 'Planet Asperger'. This book helps parents to respond positively to the challenge of AS and find the 'treasure' in their child's way of being.

..........I'm sure this book is very useful for adults with Asperger Syndrome as well as kids with AS and parents with AS children! The main reason is that this work is quite easy to understand and practical. Although I'm still single, I can see that raising AS and/or autistic children has been very stressful for their parents. Ordinary parenting doesn't always work when it comes to dealing with people with AS and other developmental disabilities. I think it is because this is exactly what ordinary people have never experienced before, which makes them harder to cope with. Certainly, most developmentally challenged people seem or look almost the same as any other people around them. However, they have been feeling different and distant from ordinary people, which is likely to lead to social inferiority and low self-confidence. I'm not the exception because I was diagnosed as ADHD and PDD(=Pervasive Developmental Disorder) when I was 34.
That's why I strongly feel that Parenting a Child With Asperger Syndrome: 200 Tips and Strategies will apply to my daily life. I know it is so difficult to carry out 100% of what is written in this book. But I'll try my best to cope with my difficulties in my life by comprehending gradually what she is driving at.

......I have Asperger's Syndrome, an adult and married. I highly recommend ths book for adults too.

Unlike most books on Asperger's Syndrome, Berenda Boyd shows a great deal of respect, understanding and acceptance of Asperger's Syndrome. Brenda really knows what she is talking about.

I especially like the very end of the book REPORT FROM PLANET ASPERGER which I always take with me where ever I am in the world. This shows people with Asperger's in their true light. Planet Asperger "would probably be kinder, safer and more truthful than this world" & "But perhaps the most special feature of all on Planet Asperger is the great respect given to children and their values."

I also liked how she compared Asperger's to Neuro Typicals akin to comparing trains to cars.

I highly recommend this book and think it is worth every penny.

.......My 4-year-old has recently received a preliminary diagnosis of AS. I borrowed this book from the library by chance and it is so brilliant and practical and positive that I'm just logging on to Amazon at the moment to buy loads more copies for family, friends and teachers. Not only does it help you understand how your child thinks and feels but it provides very specific tips on dealing with AS behaviour which is working wonders on my daughter after just a month. Brenda Boyd - if you happen to read this - I want to say a very sincere and heartfelt thank you for changing my life and my daughters

.......Really useful book by someone who knows what it is like. I have even bought a copy for a friend.

...................I have read numerous 'Asperger' related books and have found this one certainly refreshing. By that I mean I have read biographies, text book based information books and various other books to help me understand aspects of Asperger Syndrome but this one I keep going back to. It is practical and interesting. If you are a parent of an AS child, then I personally recommend you buy this book for your bookshelf! You don't have to read it cover to cover (although I did find it interesting enough to do this) You can just keep 'dipping' into it when you feel you could do with a tip or stratagy. And yes, they really do work!

.............I thought this book was wonderfully written and goes beautifully with 'Asperger Syndrome, the universe and everything',which is written by her son Kenneth Hall. buy them together now!

...........I have an extensive library of books on Aspergers, always searching for concrete methods to help my 13 year old son, and though I often loan a lot of my books out, this one will not leave my side. If you are the parent, relative or otherwise important to a child with Aspergers Syndrome, please add this book to your library. It takes each of the many 'problems' AS kids have, explains a likely reason for the behavior and gives several suggestions to help you and your child deal with them. Brenda Boyle knows her son and has come up with techniques that work.

............ I have read several books about AS and found this one to be the most helpful. It is the first book I've read that actually gave me ways to deal with my AS son.

........... Brenda Boyd, whose son Kenneth Hall wrote "Asperger's, the Universe & Everything" has written a delightfully logical book about raising a child with Asperger's Syndrome (AS) which is the spectrum partner to autism. In reading her words of humor and wisdom, it is easy to see the apple did not fall too far from the tree -- her son, Kenneth has also provided invaluable insight and information about this sensory neurobiological condition.

The book provides a clear guide in broken down steps for all, neurotypical (NT) and a/A (autism/Asperger's) alike to follow. You will want to follow the trail of steps that will take you straight to a wonderfully realistic and logical picture of life with AS. Hats off to this book!

........... This book is great. I have had it out from the library so many times and had to keep returning it so decided to buy it. It is easy to read, and easy to find things in. It is great in that it has heaps of ideas on how to handle a situation and ideas that are acutally useable and don't take up ages to implement. The beginning section of the book is great as a parent to help you realise you are not to blame, or alone. Also that what you feel is "normal" in this crazy world that we have landed in. The person diagnosed might live on the other planet as all the books say, but we as parents need to negotiate that planet as well to make it all make sence. The emotions were a lot of what I had felt at some time or another and could really relate to. I think this is an excellent book for anyone who is just starting out in the AS diagnosis stage and dealing with AS on a daily basis. It helps make sence of so many things. I've read many books since our diagnosis and this has been the best for me.

........ uncles, as well as other non-family members who may be involved in the caretaking and/or education process. This mom has been there and lived it and what she tells us is both helpful AND realistic. These kids aren't easy, but sometimes the attitudes you get from OUTSIDERS make the process of parenting an Aspie kid even more difficult. If you're a parent, this is a great tool - for you AND for the others in your life that need some outside perspective. I only wish I had gotten a hold of this when my daughter was younger. I could have used the extra support, plus the knowledge that I wasn't the only one who had ever had to deal with a kid like this.

........... As a parent of a newly-diagnosed Asperger child, I was overwhelmed. This book was a great help to ease that fear I felt. It was well written and is easily read! I would recommend this to anyone!

................ Great book to have for moms of high functioning ASD kids. Much easier to read and more straight forward than other books. Good useful tips. Highly recommend it.

................ As a parent of a 7 year old with Asperger's, this was my first book purchase on the subject. This book has enlightened me so much and has made me more patient of his "quirks". They are such complex individuals who need to be treated with understanding and respect. This book taught me many ways to do that while still being firm with discipline. I highly recommend this book to any parent who has a child with Asperger's

............... This is excellent as it is written from the viewpoint of an Asperger's person, gives an explanation, and relates situations which we all find ourselves in when we are involved with this syndrome. I'm a grandparent and purchased this book for my granddaughters as their brother has Asperger's. I read it first, gave it to my son and his wife to read, before passing it on to the grandkids. We all learned from this book, even though we have been working with professionals and educators for years. This is a must read!!!

........... I loved this book. It reinforced what I already knew about AS, and added a wealth of knowledge that I have found invaluable. The strategies and tips are great. I've used them many times now...and they work!!! It was such a relief when I read this book and learned that other parents go through the exact same thing I have been going through with my son. This author really knows what she is writing about, and you can tell it is from her own personal experiences. I recommend this book to anyone who has a child they even suspect of having some type of developmental disorder.

............... This is a good guide for assisting a parent with a child that has been diagnosed as Autistic or Asperger Syndrome. Currently one in every 150 children in North America are diagnosed with this condition. Parents need all the help that can get to deal with it and this book has some of those answers. My autistic angel is a joy to have as part of my life but he does need to be handled differently than his siblings. This book helps.

............... This book has helped in numerous ways. Even my older son is now understanding his baby brother.

................ I've read a LOT of books on Autism and on Asperger's in the last 6 years. This one gets an A+. It's a fast read and has a lot of clear and concise tips to implement in additional ways that us inventive and creative parents may not have thought of already, or if you've hit a dead end and need some help!

Brenda Boyd's book is a well-presented and easy to read guide for any parent or carer of a child with Asperger syndrome. I say 'parent or carer' as I think that this where the book is aimed, primarily. But it could be equally useful for a teacher with a child with Asperger syndrome in their class.

The beauty of this book is that it focuses not just on the needs of the child but on the needs of the parent, too. The tips and strategies are not confined to dealing with challenging behaviour in itself but to helping you be in a better position to cope with it. I was immediately taken with the book on seeing the title of the first section, 'Looking after yourself'.

The opening chapters deal intelligently with issues that no doubt all families with a child with Asperger syndrome face and they offer practical advice on how to tackle them. The tips on helping to bridge your child's social and emotional gaps, for example, give some sound advice on taking opportunities to talk situations through with your child calmly (rather than trying to deal with them in the heat of frustration and upset, as I often tried to do!). The book also deals with a vast range of 'common problems', some of which will have more resonance for individual parents of children with Asperger syndrome than others. For me, the sections on anger, food issues, handwriting and homework supervision struck a chord. And there's no need to read the sections you feel dont apply to your child because the A-Z format makes it easy to dip into the areas where you need tips and advice.

If you read it alongside Kenneth Hall's book Asperger syndrome, the universe and everything, youll benefit from some good support and advice - from both sides.
