For the follow-up to his remarkable American debut, Bap Kennedy assembled a band in his native Belfast in order to pay tribute to the legendary Hank Williams. That the resulting album -- a collection of Williams tunes reconceived by a Celtic country band -- works as well as it does is a tribute to Kennedy's intelligence and interpretive touch. Even such oft-recorded numbers as "Honky Tonk Blues," "I'm So Lonesome I Could Cry," and "I'll Never Get Out of This World Alive" sound fresh in the hands of Kennedy's fine band. - All Music
I'm a rolling stone, all alone and lost
For a life of sin, I have paid the cost
When I pass by, all the people say
"There goes another guy down the lost highway"
Just a deck of cards and a jug of wine
And a woman's lies make a life like mine
From the day we met, I went astray
I started rollin' down that lost highway
I was just a lad, nearly twenty-two
Neither good nor bad, just a kid like you
But now I'm lost, too late to pray
And I've paid the cost on the lost highway
Now, boys, don't start your ramblin' round
On this road of sin or you'll be sorrow bound
Take my advice, you'll curse the day
You started rollin' down that lost highway
You started rollin' down that lost highway
You started rollin' down that lost highway
Left my home down on the rural route
I told my pa I'm going steppin out and get the
Honky tonk blues, (honky tonk blues)
Yeah the honky tonk blues (honky tonk blues)
Oh Lord I got
Honky tonk blues
I went to a dance, I wore out my shoes
Woke up this mornin wishin I could lose
Them jumpin honky tonk blues, (honky tonk blues)
Yeah the honky tonk blues (honky tonk blues)
Oh Lord I got
Honky tonk blues
Stopped into every place in town
This city life has really got me down
I got the honky tonk blues, (honky tonk blues)
Yeah the honky tonk blues (honky tonk blues)
Oh Lord I got
Honky tonk blues
I'm gonna tuck my worries underneath my arm
And scat right back to my pappy's farm
And leave the honky tonk blues, (honky tonk blues)
Yeah the honky tonk blues (honky tonk blues)
Oh Lord I got
Honky tonk blues
Oh Lord I got
Honky tonk blues
Oh Lord I got
(Honky tonk blues)
I got the honky tonk blues
Listen to the rain a-fallin'
Can't you hear that lonesome sound?
Oh, my poor old heart is breaking
'Cause my sweet love ain't around
Lord, I think I'll start to ramble
Got to leave this weary town
This old place is way too lonely
'Cause my sweet love ain't around
On that train tonight, I'm leavin'
And don't ask me where I'm bound
I can't stay here any longer
'Cause my sweet love ain't around
'Cause my sweet love ain't around
'Cause my sweet love ain't around
Hear that lonesome whippoorwill
He sounds too blue to fly
The midnight train is whining low
I'm so lonesome, I could cry
I've never seen a night so long
When time goes crawling by
The moon just went behind the clouds
To hide its face and cry
Did you ever see a robin weep
When leaves begin to die?
That means he's lost the will to live
I'm so lonesome, I could cry
The silence of a falling star
Lights up a purple sky
And as I wonder where you are
I'm so lonesome, I could cry
Your cheatin' heart will make you weep
You'll cry and cry when you try to sleep
But sleep won't come the whole night through
Your cheatin' heart will tell on you
When tears come down like fallin' rain
You'll toss around and call my name
You'll walk the floor the way I do
Your cheatin' heart will tell on you
Your cheatin' heart will pine someday
And crave the love you threw away
The time will come, and you'll be blue
Your cheatin' heart will tell on you
When tears come down like fallin' rain
You'll toss around and call my name
You'll walk the floor the way I do
Your cheatin' heart will tell on you
I wandered so aimless, life filled with pain
I wouldn't let my dear savior in
Then Jesus came like a stranger in the night
Praise the Lord, I saw the light
I saw the light, I saw the light
No more darkness, no more night
Now I'm so happy, no sorrow in sight
Praise the Lord, I saw the light
Just like a blind man, I wandered along
Worries and fears I claimed for my own
Then like the blind man that God gave back his sight
Praise the Lord, I saw the light
I saw the light, I saw the light
No more darkness, no more night
Now I'm so happy, no sorrow in sight
Praise the Lord, I saw the light
I was a fool to wander and stray
Straight is the gate and narrow the way
Now I have traded the wrong for the right
Praise the Lord, I saw the light
I saw the light, I saw the light
No more darkness, no more night
Now I'm so happy, no sorrow in sight
Praise the Lord, I saw the light
I saw the light, I saw the light
No more darkness, no more night
Now I'm so happy, no sorrow in sight
Praise the Lord, I saw the light
I saw the light, I saw the light
No more darkness, no more night
Now I'm so happy, no sorrow in sight
Praise the Lord, I saw the light
I tried so hard my dear to show that you're my every dream
Yet you're afraid each thing I do is just some evil scheme
A memory from your lonesome past keeps us so far apart
Why can't I free your doubtful mind and melt your cold, cold heart
Another love before my time makes your heart sad and blue
And so my heart is paying now for things I didn't do
In anger, unkind words are said that make teardrops start
Why can't I free your doubtful mind, and melt your cold, cold heart
You'll never know how much it hurts to see you sit and cry
You know you need and want my love, but you're afraid to try
Why do you run and hide from life, to try it just ain't smart
Why can't I free your doubtful mind and melt your cold, cold heart
There was a time when I believed that you belonged to me
But now I know your heart is shackled to a memory
The more I learn to care for you, the more we drift apart
Why can't I free your doubtful mind and melt your cold, cold heart
Are you're lookin' at a man that's getting kinda mad
I had lots of luck, but it's all been bad
No matter how I struggle and strive
I'll never get out of this world alive
My fishing pole's broke, the creek is full of sand
My woman ran away with another man
No matter how I struggle and strive
I'll never get out of this world alive
A distant uncle passed away
And left me quite a batch
And I was living high until that fatal day
A lawyer proved I wasn't born, I was only hatched
Everything's again' me and it's got me down
If I jumped in the river, I would probably drown
No matter how I struggle and strive
I'll never get out of this world alive
These shabby shoes I'm wearing all the time
Is full of holes and nails
And brother if I stood on a worn out dime
I bet a nickel I could tell you it was head or tails
I'm not gonna worry wrinkles in my brow
'Cause nothing's ever gonna be alright, no how
No matter how I struggle and strive
I'll never get out of this world alive
No matter how I struggle and strive
I'll never get out of this world alive
No matter how I struggle and strive
I'll never get out of this world alive
No matter how I struggle and strive
I'll never get out of this world alive
No matter how I struggle and strive
I'll never get out of this world alive
No matter how I struggle and strive...
All you wanna do is sit around and pout
Well I've had enough and so I'm getting out, I'm leaving now
(I'm leaving now)
I'm a long gone daddy, I don't need you anyhow
Well I been in the doghouse so doggone long
When I get a kiss I think there's something's wrong, I'm leaving now
(I'm leaving now)
Well I'm a long gone daddy, I don't need you anyhow
(I'll go find a girl that wants to treat me right
You go get yourself a man that wants to fight, I'm leaving now)
I'm leaving now
(Well, I'm a long gone daddy, I don't need you anyhow)
Well, you start your jaws a-wagging and you never stop
You never shut your mouth until I blow my top, I'm leaving now
(I'm leaving now)
I'm a long gone daddy, I don't need you anyhow
I remember back when you were nice and sweet
(Things have really changed, you'd rather fight than eat,) I'm leaving now
I'm leaving now
I'm a long gone daddy, I don't need you anyhow
I'm gonna do some riding on the midnight train
I'm taking everything except my ball and chain, 'I'm leaving now
I'm leaving now
(Well, I'm a long gone daddy, I don't need you anyhow)
I'm a long gone daddy, I don't need you anyhow
Tonight down here in the valley
I'm lonesome and oh how I feel
As I sit here alone in my cabin
I can see your mansion on the hill
Do you recall when we parted
The story to me you revealed
You said you could live without love dear
In your loveless mansion on the hill
I've waited all through the years love
To give you a heart true and real
'Cause I know you're living in sorrow
In your loveless mansion on the hill
The light shines bright from your window
The trees stand so silent and still
I know you're alone with your pride dear
In your loveless mansion on the hill
In your loveless mansion on the hill
In the great book of John, you're warned of the day
When you'll be laid beneath the cold clay
The angel of death will come from the sky
And claim your poor soul when the time comes to die
When the angel of death comes down after you
Can you gladly say that you have been true
For you'll have to go all the way by yourself
When God shall send down the angel of death
When the lights all grow dim and the dark shadows creep
And the ones who love you are gathered to weep
Can you truly say with your dying breath
You're ready to meet the angel of death?
